Carlisle Market Square

Carlisle, UK

Kirsty Brooks

The Carlisle Market Square redevelopment is a major urban regeneration project aimed at revitalising one of the city's most historically significant public spaces .

Designed by Natural Dimensions to enhance both the aesthetic and functional value of the area, the project forms part of broader efforts to breathe new life into Carlisle’s city centre and support its long-term economic and cultural growth.

The redevelopment plan incorporates heritage-sensitive design elements which includes Kirsty’s eight flat and 2 curved illuminated glass benches that create a gallery around the back of the event space. Kirsty chose beautiful tones to match the stone colour, pairing them with imagery that highlights the historic role of the market.

The benches have been treated with a ceramic screenprint of etching onto the reverse to diffuse the light when illuminated at night. The archive photographs have been layered with printed, drawn and traced elements evoking the structures, materials and general hustle and bustle of the market place and geographical location.

Techniques used: Screenprinting; Opaque enamels; Transparent enamels; Backlighting; Etching; Curved glass
