Policy Statement

Proto Glass Studios recognises its responsibility to minimise the environmental impact of its activities and to continually improve the sustainability of our operations. As a specialist glass studio, we are committed to working responsibly with materials, energy and resources while maintaining the high standards of craftsmanship and quality for which our work is known.

We aim to incorporate environmental considerations into our day-to-day operations, project planning, procurement and manufacturing processes, and to work collaboratively with our clients, suppliers and contractors to identify opportunities for improvement.

Our Environmental Commitments

1. Responsible Use of Materials

We will seek to use materials efficiently and responsibly, reducing unnecessary waste wherever practical. We will:

  • Carefully plan projects and material requirements to minimise offcuts and waste.

  • Reuse suitable glass and other materials wherever possible.

  • Segregate glass waste and other recyclable materials to facilitate recycling and responsible disposal.

  • Consider the environmental credentials, durability and lifespan of materials when selecting products and suppliers.

  • Where appropriate, source materials locally or regionally to reduce transport impacts.

2. Waste Reduction and Recycling

We are committed to applying the waste hierarchy of reduce, reuse and recycle wherever reasonably practicable.

Our aim is to minimise the amount of waste sent to landfill by:

  • Separating recyclable glass, metals, paper, cardboard and other materials.

  • Reusing packaging materials where appropriate.

  • Reducing single-use materials within the studio.

  • Ensuring hazardous or specialist waste is stored, handled and disposed of responsibly.

  • Working with approved waste contractors where specialist disposal is required.

3. Energy and Emissions

Glass production and processing can be energy intensive, and we recognise the importance of reducing energy consumption and associated carbon emissions.

We will seek to:

  • Monitor energy use within the studio and identify opportunities for reduction.

  • Use energy-efficient equipment and lighting where practical.

  • Switch off machinery, lighting and equipment when not required.

  • Maintain equipment appropriately to ensure it operates efficiently.

  • Consider the energy efficiency of new equipment when making purchasing decisions.

  • Reduce unnecessary travel and combine deliveries and collections where practical.

  • Encourage the use of remote meetings where they can replace unnecessary business travel.

4. Water Use

We recognise the importance of responsible water consumption, particularly in processes involving glass cutting, grinding and cleaning.

We will seek to:

  • Minimise unnecessary water consumption.

  • Maintain equipment to prevent leaks and inefficient operation.

  • Reuse or manage process water where technically and environmentally appropriate.

  • Prevent the inappropriate discharge of materials, chemicals or contaminated water into drains or the wider environment.

5. Chemicals and Hazardous Materials

Where paints, enamels, adhesives, cleaning products or other chemical materials are required, we will seek to manage them responsibly.

We will:

  • Use less hazardous alternatives where suitable and reasonably practicable.

  • Store and handle chemicals in accordance with relevant safety and environmental requirements.

  • Maintain appropriate Safety Data Sheets and guidance for materials used within the studio.

  • Prevent spills and uncontrolled releases.

  • Ensure chemical and hazardous waste is disposed of through appropriate channels.

6. Sustainable Procurement

Environmental considerations will form part of our purchasing decisions wherever reasonably practicable.

We will consider:

  • Product durability and expected lifespan.

  • Recycled or recyclable content.

  • Packaging and opportunities to reduce packaging waste.

  • Supplier environmental practices.

  • Transportation distances and associated environmental impacts.

  • The potential for products and materials to be reused, repaired or recycled at the end of their useful life.

We will encourage our suppliers and contractors to adopt responsible environmental practices.

7. Transport

We recognise that the transportation of glass, materials and finished installations can contribute to our environmental impact.

Where practical, we will seek to:

  • Consolidate deliveries and collections.

  • Plan transport efficiently to reduce unnecessary journeys.

  • Use local suppliers and contractors where appropriate.

  • Consider the environmental performance of transport providers when appointing them.

  • Ensure glass and finished products are appropriately packaged to minimise damage and the environmental impact associated with replacement or re-manufacture.

8. Environmental Considerations in Projects

Where appropriate, environmental considerations will be incorporated into the design and delivery of our glass projects.

We will consider the durability, maintainability and expected lifespan of our work, recognising that creating long-lasting architectural and artistic glass can reduce the need for replacement and associated material consumption.

We will also seek to engage with clients and project teams at an early stage to identify practical opportunities to reduce environmental impacts without compromising the artistic, technical or functional requirements of the project.

9. Compliance and Good Practice

Proto Glass Studios is committed to complying with applicable environmental legislation, regulations and relevant requirements relating to our activities.

We will seek to maintain appropriate records and procedures relating to waste, materials, energy and other significant environmental aspects of our operations.

10. Continual Improvement

We recognise that environmental improvement is an ongoing process. We will periodically review our environmental performance and identify realistic opportunities for improvement.

Where appropriate, we will establish objectives and targets relating to areas such as:

  • Energy consumption and carbon emissions.

  • Waste reduction and recycling.

  • Water consumption.

  • Sustainable procurement.

  • Transport and deliveries.

  • Reduction in the use of hazardous or environmentally harmful materials.

Progress against these objectives will be reviewed by management and actions will be updated as necessary.

Responsibilities

Management at Proto Glass Studios is responsible for implementing this policy and ensuring that environmental considerations are incorporated into relevant business and operational decisions.

All employees, contractors and other personnel working on behalf of Proto Glass Studios are encouraged to support this policy and to identify opportunities to reduce waste, conserve resources and improve environmental performance.

We will communicate this policy to our employees and, where appropriate, to clients, suppliers and contractors.

Policy Review

This Environmental Policy will be reviewed periodically to ensure that it remains relevant to our activities, environmental objectives and applicable requirements.
