Coventry Cross Decorative Glass

Broadgate, Coventry, UK

Martin Donlin

Located on the original site of the first cross in Coventry city centre, a 57ft replica of the 16th century monument recreated by sculptor George Wagstaffe in the 1970s was moved, modified, and unveiled in July 2023 near Holy Trinity Church.

The cross now features glass designed by Martin Donlin that tells the history of the medieval market cross and the life of King Henry VI, and allows visitors to look through the cross for the first time.

Glass Specification:
Each panel is made from 25.5mm laminated and toughened glass with a permanent screen-printed black and etched ceramic print. The glass is encased by a seamless stainless steel rounded capping and glazed into a bespoke underground bolted metal channel. The glass was calculated for specific wind loading and meets all CE standards.

Techniques used:
screenprinted ceramic frit provides a permanent print that will not scratch off or fade externally when exposed to UV light. Some of the lettering was treated with gold leaf that resists tarnishing and corrosion.

Enormous thanks to Proto Glass Studios for manufacturing and installing the glass. What a result!
