New Wave Windows for Our Lady of Fatima Church
London, UK
The Catholic Parish Church of Our Lady of Fatima is located at the heart of the White City Estate in West London. Following five previous commissions by Mark Cazalet for the church, including the west end windows produced with Richard Proto, Fr Richard Nesbitt and the congregation commissioned a new set of six nave windows, made possible through a generous donor.
This new commission brought together Mark Cazalet and calligrapher Pansy Campbell in a collaborative dialogue with the congregation, seeking to combine the lived faith and everyday experiences of parishioners with the words and visionary prophecies of Our Lady of Fatima.
The resulting designs divide the six windows between the northern and southern aisles, with the three northern windows exploring the everyday realities of the faithful and the three southern windows responding to the words and vision of Our Lady of Fatima.
Pansy selected quotations from parishioners alongside texts from the apparitions and rendered them in her distinctive calligraphy, while Mark developed imagery through linocut prints, monoprints, ink painting, drawing, and found material that was photographed and scanned.
The designs incorporate complex layers of printed and etched information, with up to six screens of imagery, text and colour fired onto clear glass and subsequently made into double-glazed units to fit the existing metal frames.
The intricate overprinting, chromatic interactions, textures, mark-making and calligraphy presented a challenging and experimental process, which Richard Proto worked carefully to resolve into the exceptionally rich and vibrant surfaces the artists sought. Each enamel was mixed to a bespoke colour chosen by Mark and Pansy before being printed on top of one another on the screen. The themes for the images of the six curved windows are Pilgrim, Sin, Love, Tree, Pray and Angel.
The completed windows form a unique and visually rich set of works that bring together the contemporary life of the congregation and the spiritual vision of Fatima, providing visual and theological substance for generations to come.
The windows were dedicated by Archbishop Richard Moth on Sunday 25th October 2026.
